Description

SPOON and the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) are seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Nutrition Project Officer starting 1st May 2019 for our Improving Nutrition and Safe Feeding Practices in Zambia program.  CMMB and SPOON officially launched its partnership  early 2019 to strengthen nutrition and feeding practices for children living in child care facilities and children with disabilities at risk of living outside of permanent families. Together, SPOON and CMMB seek to empower and equip families, communities, and institutions to safely feed and adequately nourish children through trainings and tools.

BACKGROUND

CMMB

CMMB is a faith based non-profit International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) with over 105 years of experience globally. We believe that access to quality healthcare is a basic human right and have worked with global partners to deliver locally sustainable, quality healthcare solutions to women, children and their communities. CMMB works tirelessly for women’s and children’s health because they are disproportionately affected by illness and poverty. CMMB strives to live by its core values of collaboration, love, excellence and respect every day.  From inception, CMMB Zambia has been partnering with government and other service providers to improve the quality of service delivery and increase supply while mobilizing communities to stimulate demand through sensitization activities to reverse harmful norms. CMMB Zambia is committed to contribute to the improvement of health for women and children to reduce morbidity and mortality levels through high quality health programs, provision of medicines and other supplies, and placement of long-term volunteers.

SPOON

SPOON, a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon, USA, aims to improve nutrition and feeding practices for children living in facilities and children with disabilities living in communities so they can grow and develop to their full potential. We provide training and tools to facilitate the delivery of assessments and interventions that respond to their unique nutrition and feeding needs of these children. These tools strengthen the care of children living in residential care facilities and support their successful reintegration into their families and communities. One of our primary tools is an app, called Count Me In, which supports the assessment and monitoring of children’s nutritional status and feeding challenges over time and recommends individualized, evidence-based interventions when problems are identified. We utilize a train-the-trainer approach, whereby SPOON trains Master Trainers who will then build the capacity of caregivers in facilities and communities in adapted nutrition and feeding care. SPOON has begun work in Zambia in 2016 and we are currently implementing programs in three residential care facilities and three community-based rehabilitation centers.

Overview of Project Activities

In 2019 and 2020, SPOON and CMMB will disseminate training on improving nutrition and feeding practices to 12 child care facilities, including residential care facilities and community-based rehabilitation centers. Additionally, SPOON and CMMB will pilot the integration of our training and tools in two healthcare facilities to serve children with disabilities and their families. This pilot will serve as a model that can be scaled to other healthcare facilities with the goal of strengthening the health system to better serve children with disabilities, prevent unnecessary family separation, and support children being integrated back into their communities.
