THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL LONG TERM VOLUTEER POSITION BASED IN ZAMBIA.
Position description:
The Long Term Volunteer will spend 80% of time teaching Church History and other related courses to Presbyterian students in the 3 year diploma program at Chasefu Theological College in rural eastern Zambia.
The individual will spend 20% of time working with CCAP Chasefu Theological College Management to design and produce materials which effectively share with Synod Partners stories of CTC and... [more] Chasefu Farm and to equip college staff with quality educational and presentation materials. In addition the individual will support the CCAP Synod Office as needed to design and produce materials which effectively share with Synod partners stories of the breadth and significance of CCAP Zambia Synod work.
This position reports to the Dean of Studies, CTC. As Media Specialist, the individual will meet quarterly with General Secretary/ Synod Office for updating, problem solving, and setting directions and priorities.
Essential tasks and responsibilities:
As Lecturer (80% of time):
MTh with emphasis on Church History. Fluency in English required; Tumbuka preferred.
Required skills, experience, licenses, and certifications:
An MTh holder with expertise related to church history and other related courses.
Required ecclesiastical status:
Member of PC(USA) or other reformed denomination
Length of first term of service and preferred starting date:
2 years beginning March 1, 2019.
Description of location:
Zambia is a country in central southern Africa about the size of Texas. It is a land locked country bordered by Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Angola and DRC Congo. Citizens are made up primarily of 73 Bantu tribal groups as well as small percentages of Indians, Arabs and South Africans.
The official language of Zambia is English. Other major languages include Chinyanja, Bemba, Tonga, Lozi, Kalbale, and Lunda but the population speaks 73 local languages and dialects.
It is most likely that this position will be located in rural eastern Zambia in Lundazi, Emusa or Chasefu. Lundazi is a town of 12,000 people in eastern Zambia along the Malawi border, 110 miles north of Chipata. It is a former colonial headquarters, and now capital of Lundazi district, the central portion of eastern Zambia. The main source of income is agriculture and trading. Major language is Tumbuka; major tribes are Tumbuka, Chewa and Ngoni. There are no malls or large supermarkets but there are many small local shops as well as banks, post office, police station, airstrip, several lodges (including the Castle Hotel), and a couple of internet cafes. Lundazi is approximately 3 hour drive to South Luangwa National Park, a very popular safari destination.
Lundazi is former headquarters for CCAP Synod of Zambia, and there is a large compound there housing many of the departments of the church including shallow wells, relief and development, mission schools, and health.
20 miles north of Lundazi is Emusa, a small but growing town now the headquarters of Chasefu District.
30 miles north of Lundazi is Chasefu, home of CCAP Zambia’s Chasefu Theological College and Chasefu Farm and a former mission station of Free Church of Scotland. [less]

As Lecturer (80% of time):
- Prepare/ update courses and lecture at diploma level in Church History and other courses as assigned; evaluate students’ knowledge
- Participate in committee work and administrative work as requested
- Mentor spiritual formation of students
- Engage in professional research and writing
- Participate fully in the life and work of CTC academic community
- Perform other tasks as assigned by Dean of Studies
- Work with the Synod to create materials to assist PC (USA) constituencies and other CCAP Zambia partners in understanding the situation of the church in southern Africa with special emphasis on evangelism and church growth and discipleship
- Facilitate ability of CCAP Zambia to best tell stories of priority work/ objectives through creation of quality materials including brochures, flyers, newsletter, and videos.
- Support development of professional presentation materials for CTC and Chasefu Farm and build capacity of Chasefu personnel in terms of story, design, layout, and illustration.
