ZAMBART is a research-focused non-governmental organisation that conducts research on HIV and Tuberculosis to help control and mitigate the impact of the dual epidemic. ZAMBART staff form an interdisciplinary team with a range of expertise including epidemiology, clinical science, social science, laboratory, operations research, health systems and services research, health policy analysis, health economics, health communication research compliance and counselling.

To support our wide range of research activities, we are looking for candidates to fill the following position:

YATHU YATHU:

Study summary: Yathu Yathu (“for us by us”) is a cluster-randomised trial that will evaluate the impact of community-based, peer-led SRH services on knowledge of HIV status and coverage of key SRH services among AYP. The intervention, called Yathu Yathu (For us, by us), was designed with adolescents and young people in a formative research study in 2017/18.

Peer Support Workers (10 – Chipata , 10 – Kanyama)

Position summary: Reporting to Yathu Yathu Hub Supervisor, the Peer Support Worker (PSW) is familiar with the community in which they work, appointed to provide a package of basic services at the Yathu Yathu Hubs, particularly HIV counselling and testing, screening for STIs and TB, providing basic knowledge on HIV, STIs, TB, and Contraceptives.  The PSW pair should ideally consist of a gender-balanced group of individuals, with job roles and responsibilities as follow

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial baseline data collection
  • Conduct HIV and TB group or individual education
  • Conduct HIV counselling and provide HIVST including demonstrations
  • Distribute condoms as appropriate and provide and facilitate condom demonstrations
  • Provide basic contraceptive information and refer to adolescent nurse and Yathu Yathu Hub Supervisor for further advice and collection of contraceptives
  • Ensure videos on SRH and conduct quizzes on lessons learnt and lead discussions on videos
  • Screen participants for TB symptoms, and refer to the health care facility for diagnosis and treatment
  • Actively link participants to appropriate HIV treatment and care services especially:
    • HIV positive individuals to ART and other treatment and care services
    • HIV negative individuals to VMMC services, STI screening,
    • HIV positive pregnant women to ANC services




  • Provide on-going psychosocial support for ART adherence to those on ART

  • Throughout the visits, utilize the electronic data capture (EDC) device to collect individual level data and to document completion of PSWs activities


Minimum requirements



  • 20 years of age and above

  • Trained peer educator with Rapid HIV testing and a Grade 12 certificate

  • Be able to speak, read, and write English and be conversant with local languages

  • Experience working with adolescents in HIV counselling and testing, adherence counselling and psychosocial counselling

  • Be conversant with the local geography

  • Resident of community and must be willing to walk long distances within the community

  • Must be able to maintain client confidentiality

  • Previous experience as a peer counsellor
